The temperature inside my working quarters is still cold. It’s still about 20 degrees cooler than the average work environment. I’m not sure if the workers code or any sort of legal binding thing in the state of washington requires tech workers to be warm, but it sure is hard to get serious programming done without the aid of heat.
We did get an upgrade though, we have hot water, which is now helping make tea. Tea and hot water in general are keys to a warmer work place.
The downside, lunch.
Lunch is a meal of champions. Lunch is heralded as the meal between dinner and breakfast. Us tech workers, sans microwave, eat cups of dehydrated noodles, sprinkled with some sort of salt like substance. It is really sad.
When did tech work become so crappy? I long for the days of Mt Dew infused caffeine rushes, and hot lunches from the microwave or cheap taco truck runs that would have me so full I had to sit in an irc chat room until I felt better.
Now in Seattle, I sit in a concrete grave, my team and I trying to get warm by the stupidity of the heaters that they have brought us….that don’t produce heat as they suck electricity away from the walls. All this for a wage lower than the starting employee at a target retail store.
The tragedy of the tech worker is lived daily by Jorge Orduna….sir jorge as you know him.

That sucks !
I need a good lunch, even though I don’t have that much time. I don’t eat breakfast, so I’m usually starving by 12:00.
I usually buy my lunch… it’s cheap, we have places by the school. A sandwich, a soup, this kind of things.
I can’t imagine not being able to eat anything hot (well, Ramen noodles aren’t really a good meal !).
