Reading vs. Television

Last night sparked a first in my house. The television was on and I wasn’t watching it. Growing up, television was my babysitter for the most part, and I spent a lot of time watching different shows and what not, and then I suddenly lost interest.

It wasn’t an easy transition, but in college I was so poor that I couldn’t afford to get cable or anything in my little apartment. So I had to rely on the video store to cover my entertainment. I got bored fast and I ended up just not using the television much.

I moved to Seattle early this year and the first thing I got at my apartment was the internet and cable. I still like professional wrestling, but it is definitely not on daily, and last night there was a four hour gap between dinner and WWE Monday Night Raw.

At work I spend a lot of time sitting at a computer, editing, fixing problems, and updating a website. I don’t read a lot of books at work, but I do manage to read up on blogs and different things. It’s just part of my job to be up to date on all things related to technology, but when I am at home my job is no longer to do tech in the traditional sense. My second job finds me writing ads, blog posts, and articles for various groups. (I like the freelancing world) But last night I finished all my work (writing) early, and had a few advances with deadlines that weren’t for a while, so I had a long gap of nothing to do before wrestling came on.

What did I do?

I could’ve watched 3 episodes of Law and Order, but instead, I sat on the couch while my wife watched Law and Order and I read my water damaged book, Crossing California, and while I am still fighting a cold, I finally had some rest.

Television is boring. Reading ignites my imagination like no other. I do enjoy dvd’s and watch them to update my other blogs, but I definitely enjoyed reading for three hours last night. I truly felt good, and I finally felt as though the world could spin without me having to worry about it at all.

I recommend reading a book instead of watching television. Think about it…you spent how many years learning to read? Might as well use that for something.

    Reading is def. better :)
I almost never watch TV, unless hubby’s home and watches it and then most times we watch a movie on DVD (Good luck finding anything decent other than the news on TV in Kuwait ;) )
