A lot of people are quick to talk about how we need to deport people, strengthen our borders, and stop illegal immigration. Others are quick to make villains out of illegal immigrants citing one or two scarce incidents of rape, murder, and all sorts of violence. But no one ever puts a human face to illegal immigrants, and now one seems to glorify the good that can come from such a lousy situation.
I was an Illegal Immigrant for 20 years, grew up in some hard times.
I am now an American Citizen, and it wasn’t an easy course.
Last night I heard some sad news that made the whole Immigration situation hit harder than ever. My stepmother, an illegal immigrant from Mexico is set to be deported any day now. Not only that, her two kids that were born here will be taken too. My father escapes the fate because I put in papers for him to be naturalized and he’s currently waiting for the final processes to become a citizen, so he’ll be staying behind.
Regardless of what politicians say, no matter what extremists write in their blogs, no one can say anything unless they can feel the sting of the situation in their own family.
There are downsides to massive amounts of people flooding the country, and they all have their stories, this is my story.
But will anyone care?

I’m sorry to hear about your situation. … Immigration really is an important and touchy subject for lots of people and personally when I hear people saying something on the lines of “deport them all” I just get a bit bitter.
I mean, it’s such a complicated issue. For one, our economy would collapse (not to say it’s in the best shape anyway), and for two (to cut my comment short), if I was in another country and knew I could come here and make a better life for my family, I’d do it in an instant.
Best of luck my friend.
That sucks big time.
Regardless of politics, I don’t think most people understand the situation as you said. Illegals aren’t just illegals, they are human beings with family, ties, a job etc. People aren’t illegal because it’s cool, they just don’t have another solution most of the time.
I got a new perspective after I immigrated to Canada myself.
