3/11/08 Music Releases (Some Good, Some Bad)

For those of you that are wondering, today is Music Tuesday…of sorts. There are a lot of records released today, and here are a few notable ones, that you might want to purchase for yourself, as well some oldies that I’ve thrown in for good measure. Obviously this list is not the most complete list of album releases out there, but it’s worth noting to me, and my musical tastes…and they might fit yours too…might.

Cassettes Won’t Listen, Small-Time Machine EP
Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Eleventh Hour
Fozzy, All That Remains Reloaded CD/DVD
From First to Last, We All Turn Back to Dust/Once Was Lost But Now Profound Single
Meshuggah, Obzen
Mike Patton, A Perfect Place CD/DVD
Presidents of the United States of America, These Are the Good Times People
Saosin, Come Close
Snoop Dogg, Ego Trippin’
Supergrass, Diamond Hoo Ha Import

Those are the major releases that I think are somewhat important to the listening audience of music fans that still buy cd’s and music. I know, it’s a dying idea to have cd’s, but I still buy them, and while I own 2 mp3 players, and have a hard drive full of music, I still love the tangible quality of owning a piece of artwork of sorts. As a graphic/media designer, some of the booklets far out weight the quality of the album at times.

So to weigh in on that notion, I’ll chime in with some stellar artwork/album packages that changed the way I viewed music and art at the same time.

Poison the Well Tear From Red Cd on sale now
Poison The Well, Tear From The Red - Rewind time for a short period of time and you’ll remember when these boys mixed heavy music and melodic choruses and toured the nation with up and comers Thursday and Thrice. These guys put down a foundation for the style and substance of music to come years after this album was released. The artwork in this album was epic, it featured expensive looking paper, and clear acetate with writing on it that could only be seen by directly looking at it in light. Marvelous design and thought was put into this booklet, and you can’t have that with a simple mp3.

Zao Self Titled Cd on Sale

Zao, Self-Titled - Zao’s a household name in Christian Metal, and with their Self-Titled release they brought substance and style to a whole new level with the packaging of their cd. The booklet was done on card stock, and featured futura artwork, and abstract representations that held the meaning of metalcore in a different light, than the contents found on the ground breaking cd.

I hope you enjoyed this little romp into the musical world, I’ll return some other time…with more musical madness. For now, buy a cd, support your favorite bands, and check out the artwork on the Zao and Poison the Well records, worth it, definitely worth it.

Might pickup Saosin. I enjoyed the stuff I’ve heard of them with “You’re Not Alone” being an amazing song.
