The Offspring to most people are just an annoying Orange County punk rock band. They are known for a lot of hits, and hold the biggest selling independent album in the world. Their Independently released album “Smash” sold 14 million copies, and was a HUGE album for punk rock at the time. The follow up to Smash didn’t sell double digits, but managed to capture my imagination with some amazing lyrics, some awesome tunes and great music videos. The music videos in question were a trio of hilarious videos featuring some no name actors, and looked super low budget. These videos WERE NOT PLAYED ON MTV! That’s right, MTV would not play these videos, because the quality was so poor, and highly offensive, even by todays standards. The music and lyrics were hilarious and just featured some high quality sounds in a poor quality way.
Oh and if you are easily offended, or just don’t like profanity in general, DO NOT GO BEYOND THIS LINE! Because it’s coming!
Mota by The Offspring
Mota!
Everyday, well it’s the same
That bong that’s on the table starts to call my name
I take a hit and zone out again
I’ll be paranoid and hungry by a quarter to ten
Watching reruns on my TV
I’m laughing off my ass at Three’s Company
I don’t know if I’m understood
But hearing Jimmy Buffet never sounded so good
Your memory’s gone and so is your life (your life)
Mota Boy
But losing out just never felt so right
Your enemy’s you and so is your life (your life)
Mota Boy
But losing out might feel okay all night
Mota!
I’m driving down to the barrio
Going 15 miles an hour cause I’m already stoned
Give the guy a twenty and wait in the car
He tosses me a baggie then he runs real far
I take a hit but it smells like a clove
Oh fuck I got a baggie of oregano
This ritual is destroying me
But I guess it could be worse
It could be methedrine
Your memory’s gone and so is your life (your life)
Mota Boy
But losing out just never felt so right
Your enemy’s you and your couch is your life (your Life)
Mota Boy
But losing out might take
Losing out might take you all night
Mota!
See! If you can get past the thrash can of weed you can see some hilarious footage, some awesome examples of how crappy it is to be a stoner.
Didn’t like that one? How about this cool BMX related video about driving in Los Angeles.
Bad Habit by The Offspring
Hey man you know I’m really okay
The gun in my hand will tell you the same
But when I’m in my car
Don’t give me no crap
Cause the slightest thing and I just might snap
When I go driving I stay in my lane
But getting cut off it makes me insane
I open the glove box
Reach inside
I’m gonna wreck this fucker’s ride
I guess I got a bad habit
Of blowin’ away (Yeah, Yeah)
I got a bad habit (Yeah, Yeah)
And it ain’t goin’ away (Yeah, Yeah)
Yeah (Yeah, Yeah)
Yeah (Yeah, Yeah)
Well they say the road is a dangerous place
If you flip me off I’ll get in your face
If you drive on my ass
Your foot’s on the gas
And your next breath is your last
Drivers are rude
Such attitudes
But when I show my piece
Complaints cease
Something’s odd
I feel like I’m god
You stupid dumbshit goddam motherfucker!
I open the glove box
Reach inside
I’m gonna wreck this fucker’s ride
While not exactly a song for everyone, these lyrics are still interesting in some ways, if you can place them into proper context, and for me, I just get it…really I do.
Here’s the third and final example of how genius some of these lyrics were:
Cool To Hate by The Offspring
I hate a lot of things
I hate a lot of people that are lame
I like to hate stuff
Cause then I don’t havae to try and make
A change
I hate teachers
I hate school
I hate the cheerleaders
And anyone who’s cool
I hate the office
I hate the Quad
Don’t wanna learn nothing
I want to be a slob
It’s cool to hate
It’s cool to hate
I don’t like nothing and I like that fine
(Liking something’s just a waste of time)
It’s cool to hate
It’s cool to hate
I don’t like nothing and I like that fine
(Liking something’s just a waste of time)
I don’t like nothing and like that fine
(Liking something’s just a waste of time)
Yeah I hate everything
I even hate you too
So fuck you
I’m always thinking bad
I never have nothing good to say
I’d rather tear things down
Than build them up
It’s easier that way
I hate the jocks
And I hate the geeks
I hate the trendies
But I also hate the freaks
I hate Dr. Martens
And Muscle T’s
I’m only happy when I’m in my misery
I’ll cut you down and give you lip
Being positive’s so unhip
I’ll cut you down cause I’m a fool
Being positive’s so uncool
I hate the jocks
And I hate the geeks
I hate the trendies
But I also hate the freaks
I hate your band
And I hate TV
I’m only happy when I’m in my misery
So at this point, you’ve probably been offended somehow. But really, it’s just music, and lyrics. Sure it’s not 19th century Russian literature, or anything along those lines. But for me, and my first hearing of these words and music at age of 15, they spoke to the rebellious side of me. These songs still hold true in a lot of ways, and while a lot of people will not get it, it’s ok, because not everything is for everyone. I’m ok with that.
If you liked any of these things, you can pick up the Offspring discography, or Ixnay on the Hombre by the Offspring on cd format in my online store…that’s right, I have an online store.

I’m 15 and I actually came across this band last December. This is my favorite album ,and I had no idea they had such funny videos to go along with the songs. Thanks!
I didn’t know the video (no MTV in France…) but I used to be a big fan of The Offspring when I was a teen. Not that I would understand all the lyrics but the irony of most of the songs wasn’t lost…
I don’t know what their worse songs keep on playing on radio.
