Weeked Update First Sunday Edition

The first of June! I didn’t think the Earth could withstand so much global warming, or whatever pandemic was suppose to kill us off this time. Whatever the case is, I’m watching Fight Club and writing this (which will be posted shortly, obviously); on this first Sunday of June I have a pair of movie reviews that will have you reconsidering chick flicks, urban comedies, or will have you passively leaving this site yet again.

Before I get through the reviews, I need to tell you guys about my big score.

Google gave me a hundred dollars, Text Link Ads gave me forty five dollars, and I’ve gotten a few more dollars from selling books on half.com. Yesterday, I went to a few bookstores with heavy discounts, and purchased a few items. I ended up buying a lot of books to sell and make a few cents here and there.

I also traded in all the books that I just finished reading, and reviewing for my various blogs, and ended up picking up something interesting as well.

I picked up Essential Daredevil Volume 1. The great thing is that anything from Marvel’s Essential comics series are printed on newspaper and in black and white. I then purchased some colored pencils and am now using the 500 pages of volume one to relieve stress. I’m coloring each character and background in with colored pencils and crayons.

Why?

Because I thought about something interesting this past weekend.

Why is it that we spend so many years coloring as a fun activity, then casually brush it aside when we get older?

So instead of finding escapist consumption to heel my stressed brain, I’ve decided to color in the lines and make art out of these black and white drawings across 500 comic book pages. It is like I’m a kid again.

I’ll scan some finished pages, to illustrate what I’m doing.

But here’s the meat of the matter, some reviews.

First Sunday Cover
First Sunday is a film that was panned by critics, and most of the viewing audience alike. Rightfully so, because the marketing didn’t follow what the movie was about. The marketing was purely relying on comedy. The movie opens up with some comical moments, and for the most part it is quite hilarious to see the characters involved in the situations.

The plot revolves around two career petty criminals who are sentenced to 5,000 hours of community service. Meanwhile the main Character has a son that might move to Atlanta, Georgia with his mom, unless seventeen thousand dollars can be given in order to stick around. The two criminals, while working on some road clean up, spot a very attractive church going girl; they follow her and find out that the church has a lot of movie saved for the potential relocation into the suburbs.

Sub-plots develop, but the majority of the film is filmed inside a church where the two bonehead criminals run into some problems trying to get the money. Through the film the message is more about redemption, and corruption in the church, than it is a comedy. It turns serious as the congregation begin to love the criminals, and the tables turn and all is well.

This movie is not that good, and is rather boring at times, even though there are few instances of greatness. The guys that brought you Friday, did a great thing in their franchise, but this film, isn’t up to par with those films, and just falls flat. Sure there’s some laughs, but overall…it’s just not that good.

If you’re a big fan of urban comedy, than you might enjoy First Sunday on dvd, but really…it’s not worth it.

Dan in Real Life Cover
Dan in Real Life stars the 40 Year Old Virgin, in a serious role. A widower goes back home for a family reunion with his three daughters and falls for a woman in a book store. The kicker is that she is going out with his brother. Dan must choose family or risk not enjoying his new found love…and well…things go great for a while, and then they just sour as the two find out in a harsh way that they are interested in the same woman.

Dan in real life has a lot of good moments, and though it’s a very slow moving film, it has enough heart to be interesting. What happened to me personally, was that I got into the character of Dan so much that I was rooting for him, and was almost in a daze. I felt as though I was in the film, the ultimate euphoric escape, and the credits rolled, and I awoke to my status…married on the floor, too close to the television.

Here is the Dan In Real Life Movie Trailer:

This film is not half bad, but it’s not the greatest film to watch if you’re tired. Dan in Real Life is available on dvd now, in our crummy store.
