The Promotion looked to be the funniest movie coming out of the film festival circuit, and from the looks of the trailer it sure did. However, The Promotion ended up jumping through a lot of fences to end up nowhere on the radar of anyone. This movie came through cinema’s like a whisper in the wind and rightfully so, never have I went to bat on a movie that ended up so lackluster to me.
First off, Sean William Scott will always be Stifler from American Pie. With that in mind, his performance in this film just screamed a subdued and dare I say, boring performance. The other side of this coin was played by John C. Reilly, and while he’s normally a great actor, he just seems out of his league in this one.
The movie revolves around two guys competing for the same job, being Grocery Store Manager of a new store in the chain that they work in. The set up is easy, but the delivery is really slow and boring.
If you like regular, normal life, you are going to love this movie. This movie shows super market life at naseum. From the parking lot comment cards, to the interior doldrums that I used to have to deal with. That’s right, I used to work at a grocery store, during some of the same shifts in this movie.
Here’s a trailer for The Promotion:
The Promotion leaves a lot of room for improvement and is really slowly paced. It completely loses track of its potential audience, and focuses on the wrong things at the wrong times. It really makes for a hard movie to watch. I really wanted to cheer for this one too, but I just couldn’t give it a major positive.
