My friends and I were in love with this skater named Chad Muska. No, not like “love” love, we just were infatuated with him. Looking back on it, I’m not sure why. I think it could have been that we were stuck in a small apartment for a whole summer, with the blinds closed playing Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 12 hours a day, and barely sleeping.
Maybe it was because he just seemed like the coolest skateboarder in the world to us. I’m not sure what it was, but he was our guy. I remember for three boards straight, I had The Muska’s board. I had the Shorty’s Boom Box deck in 3 different colors! I was so cool, and I learned a lot of tricks with that Muska deck. I eventually moved on, and bought a Jamie Thomas deck from Zero and now I ride an Almost deck that is the Daewon Song pro model.
Whatever happens in life, I still sit back and wonder what was so great about Chad Muska? Here is some video footage of The Muska, I’m still not sure why I liked the guy so much:
Here is a video from 2000, I was 17 years old and still rockin the red Muska shirts, trying to be like that guy; I was a doofus:
Here’s a clip from last years skate hit: This Is My Element:
We all have hero’s and dare I say, “Idols” and while some are more positive than others, I guess this guy somehow did his job well. He turned a mexican loner, living in Culver City, Ca. into a skateboarder for life. Go figure.
