The above image is blurred…yep…I didn’t think it was Nc-17 enough for this blog and it entered into x-rated territory.
One of the things that I appreciate about horror cinema is the fact that it doesn’t find a home in the mainstream very often. At least not the way I envision horror, and it’s probably the same way many people do, depending on how far back your love of horror goes. I remember growing up wishing I could see “banned” films, and today with dvd and copyright laws loosening their grips, many of these “banned” films are now finding a home on dvd.
The latest and probably sickest one to date is a movie that was directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini called “Salo” aka “120 Days of Sodom”. The movie has been talked about as one of the sickest films of all time.
Well, I haven’t seen the film yet, however this thing is going to take the cake as far as exploitation and otherwise “useless” films. Some people might argue that “Disaster Movie” is the film that is going to go down as the worst movie, and it might. But I beg to consider the movie “Salo” for it’s take on sexuality devoid of any sort of emotion, and a far cry from any example of anything exhibited in porn these days.
I digress, porn can get pretty nasty, and how this film made it past the screening rooms is beyond me.
Among the acts described in the “Salo” wikipedia page alone, one must really consider how depraved you must be to want to watch or own this film.
On the other hand, this film is seen as a lost art. Or maybe it’s just as what one writer describes in the following manner: “… Salò has been referred to as a film presenting the “death of sex”, a “funeral dirge” of eroticism amidst of sex’s mass commercialization.” Uh….how do you follow that up?
Salo is quite possibly one of the scariest pieces of film to view, not because of it’s “horror” undertones, but because it simply looks to be a sickening model of the past.
I however, will most likely at least see it once, since before now it was the most highly coveted dvd ever released. Now it’s getting Criterion Treatment, and while most people are talking about politics, this movie is going to get under the skin of 99% of the people that will see it. Others, like myself, in the 1% range might even enjoy it for some awful reason and praise it as a long lost picture of repulsion.
Or I might throw up.
This movie is NOT for everyone, it might not be for anyone, but hey…they released Disaster movie right? So might as well check out what all the fuss is about with the 1970’s cult and I do mean cult or maybe occult classic “Salo” which is now on dvd and available online.

It’s Pasolini… and it was the seventies…
That said I agree with you, the movie is sick. I like Sade’s books though
