Scary Comics

Whatever happened to all the comic book writers that did scary and dare I say; horrific comics? Furthermore, has our society become so illiterate that there is no need for horror and/or scary comics? Sure there are a few standouts still going strong, but it seems to me, at least looking back at history, that there was a lot more interest in reading and subscribing to fringe belief systems than there is today. Specifically targeting those people that would be much afraid to watch a horror film, but would still pick up a ghost story in comic book format is not easy to do, but have we really lost interest? I don’t know where to point my finger of blame and/or shame, but I want to say that the wussification of America, coupled with the fascination that Hollywood seems to have with converting superhero movies into full length films has me wondering where are my horror comics like Ghosts! I maybe asking a question in an odd way, or I might just be rambling, but a good Horror comic series seems to be lacking in today’s comic book crossover world. Oh and I am tired of hearing comic book newcomers talking about Watchmen. Let’s be serious, these guys and gals didn’t even care about Watchmen before we saw a trailer for the film that is coming out next year. Maybe I am feeling a little righteous indignation, but am I wrong somehow? I mean, I had to endure a lot of teasing and ridicule growing up, and it seems that now that the jocks are reading my beloved comic books and graphic novels, I am no longer a part of a demographic of lovable losers, but rather a part of the bigger picture, one that I never really wanted to be a part of in the first place.
