Jack Black and Mos Def are two friends in a small town who happen to stumble on a funny adventure together. Be Kind Rewind has its moments, but it’s not that great of a movie.
The movie is about a video store clerk who has been left in charge of the store while his boss is away researching the video store industry that is more about dvd, as well as taking a little road trip to meet his friends. To throw a wrench into the video store world, Jack Blacks character accidentally electrocutes himself and gets magnetized, he then visits his good pal at the video store and demagnetizes all the vhs tapes, ruining the video store business.
To remedy this, the two decide to make their own versions of the movies that people can rent, and then turn the whole thing into a full scale business. Meanwhile, there is a back story of their city discovering a long lost musical legend, who may or may not have existed.
Here is a trailer for Be Kind Rewind now available on dvd:
Alright, what’s up with this movie? Jack Black and Mos Def are talented musicians and can perform well on screen, but this movie seems to be way too long. The movie should have been an on going comedy series or sketch on SNL, but not a full length film. The ideas found on this film are initially funny, and anyone that has grown up in the video age can relate to making their own movies or home movies, but this film stretches out that one trick too long and you soon realize that you’ve just wasted moments of your life trying to decipher this attempt at humor.
As a kids movie, this might work, but as a serious comedic endeavor, it falls flat near the third act. There is an overwhelming sense of stupidity found in Jack Black’s character and while I do appreciate the balance that the film produces with the sub plots, I don’t think that this film really turned out well. In fact, I thought it was sophomoric at best, and while I usually enjoy dumb movies, even this movie was too dumb for me to enjoy.
I don’t recommend Be Kind Rewind, but if you’re a sucker for cheap comedy, maybe you’ll like it more than I did.

I saw part of the movie in the plane between zzzz and it wasn’t that good. The idea was funny goofy though, which is usually my kind.
Though of you in the video store though!
