The Book Buying Addiction

I know that books, much like cars, depreciate in value the moment they leave the bookstore, however I can’t help myself from buying and reading books. The past weekend I went to two separate bookstores and managed to walk out with books. Even though I’m in the middle of reading The Secret Life of Houdini, I manage to still buy more. It gets worse because I buy new books rather than buying used or cheaper online. I guess I’m a sucker for literature and bookstores in general.

This weekend I picked up three new books, and am going to try and polish every book I have off by the end of the year, so I’m going to be doing as much reading as I possibly can. I feel like I’m in college again (not like it’s a long time ago, It’s been roughly over a year now since I’ve graduated) and it feels good to read. There’s a satisfaction there that I don’t really know how to describe.

So here is what I picked up:

High

High Fidelity by Nick Hornby
– I love the movie, it is one of my top 5 films. (no pun intended…if you know what I mean) I kept seeing the book in libraries and in stores, so I finally just bought it. I had a 30% off coupon from Borders Rewards and I just caved in at the sight of this book. I’m sure it will be good as it manages to stay on the forefront of recommendations from various lists, including my own list of 1,000 Books to Read.

Assassination of Jesse James

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford by Ron Hansen – One of the best movies that no one saw, was based on this book. So I bought the book and it was smaller than I had expected. I am going to be reading this one, and hopefully the movie was as good as this book. I know few movies are, but the movie was epic in scale, and one of my favorite performances by Brad Pitt ever! It was nearly flawless if I do say so myself…and I do say.

Dead Wood

Deadwood by Pete Dexter – I am a huge fan of the show Deadwood, and this book caught the eye of my wife, before I could finish browsing the literature section. I was looking for a thicker read, but this one looked fascinating to me and the back cover really sold me on the idea of reading it. It basically called this an epic western, and while I’m not an expert on the time period, I had to purchase it and so now it’s on my to read pile, which seems to be growing exponentially alongside my to watch pile.

Honorable mention goes to Alma Guillermoprieto’s book The Heart that Bleeds. I couldn’t find the cover, but you can see it and more via amazon.com. I bought this book a couple of weeks ago and it’s sitting on my to read pile as well. This book is about latin America today and the cover is just so amazing, that I hope the interior lives up to the visual. They say never judge a book by its cover, but I always judge books like that, but that’s not say that I won’t read a book with a horrible looking cover, I just like judging…I’m an artist, I can do that.

So there you have it folks. I’m addicted to the act of consuming literature, and I too have buyers guilt. I should really start using the library system, before this whole book thing gets out of hand.

I’d buy more books if they weren’t that expensive! They were much cheaper in France.

I just saw the worse movie ever: have you ever heard of Five Across The Eyes? It’s a 2006 movie, just wondering, you know, from your time in the video store…

yes, I do recall Five Across The Eyes. I loved the box cover, didn’t really like the movie. It was common place to have good graphic design on dvd covers and then have terrible movies attached. Sadly, I did in fact sit through that one. Worst ever? I think I could top it…I recommend sitting through Ax’Em…ouch.

Good choices! I am a fan of the used bookstore though. I know that it doesn’t support the author, but over half of the books I read anyway are by DEAD authors who wouldn’t see a penny anyway.

And I like to support the used bookstores, of course.

And yes, Jesse James is one of the best films of the decade and it is a great book too!
