In the past couple of weeks I commented and reviewed several records from The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. For those that haven’t heard who they are, here’s a quick recap of who they are, and links to my reviews and comments about their discography.
The Boston natives started playing music together in 1983 and many music snobs will credit them as starting the ska-core genre. The harder ska sound is a mix of third wave ska and the harder styling and speed of punk rock. To date they have released several records including a couple of live discs, several vinyl singles and much more. The band continues to record and play, although in a limited capacity. They haven’t been nearly as active since releasing their 2002 record “Jackknife To A Swan”.
The Bosstones started getting noticed in the late 80’s but didn’t hit it big until the 90’s. The band had to muscle their way through a strong hardcore scene that was ravaging the east coast music scene, at least in the underground, but was able to earn respect with a more “hard” sound than other ska acts.
Just like many up and coming bands, the Bosstones were selling out venues in their hometown and the surrounding areas, but when it came to touring, no one seemed to care. Playing to 8 people at a time wasn’t exactly what Motley Crue was singing about when talking about rock & roll, that’s for sure. In fact ska fans weren’t so receptive to the debut record with so much emphasis placed on metallic riffs rather than up-stroked guitars that ska fans were used to.
The band is known for wearing “plaid” clothing on stage and have even parlayed that look into a line of Converse shoes with all plaid. It wasn’t until the 90’s that the band saw major success, especially in the mid to late 90’s.
