I spent several years in Seattle, and there I got to know many dj’s and hip hop music fans that made me a believer in hip hop and many other musical outputs by local Seattle artists and beyond. So when I heard that there was a mash up group consisting of Chad Blinman and Trevor Keith (Face to Face) I was thrilled.
Legion of Doom is the mash up group and they formulate a world of music that you probably wouldn’t expect. The music sonically sounds like your traditional mash up of sounds and noises that create layered hip hop sonic booms while lyrics are spoken, rapped, and sung over it.
I know, I’ve reduced this to the most bare of terms, but these guys put forward a good sense of sounds and you’ll be hard pressed to find other records with the same type of urgency that is presented here.
The downside to this record is the fact that it’s a record you have to here in its entirety. Picking and choosing tracks won’t give you that sense of musical genius that Legion of Doom brings out this time around.
Legion of Doom vs The Triune is a great record in terms of mash ups. You’ll like it, if you like that sort of thing, and if not, there’s always the old Face to Face records to keep you company.

If you haven’t picked up the new Converge, you have to check it out, it’s an instant classic.
Bodyjar is one of the bands that people either loved or never heard of. Much like many pop-punk bands before the 1994 explosion of the genre, Bodyjar hit and missed in many different points. However, in the year that saw bands like Greenday, The offspring, and Blink 182 hit big with their records, Bodyjar released one hell of an album of punk rock and pop sensiblity that still has great riffs, fast drumming and quality sing along parts.
Rimshot! came out in 1996 via Revelation Records and made quite a noise for the time. The album got them tours with Nofx, Face to Face and others, and were on their way to making some big moves. It wasn’t until 2000 that they signed with EMI, but they were well on their way with this record.
Rimshot! found its way into my collection via a small record store in Seattle, Washington. The cd was 99 cents and the store clerk wouldn’t sell me a copy of Down By Law’s “Last of the Sharpshooters”. So I ended up getting this one instead and it was well worth it. Bodyjar plays a fast paced punk rock with lots of guitar riffs, that are somewhat rough. While the recording is polished, the style is more aggressive than many other bands that came out in the same year. The sing-a-longs are there, the lyrics are interesting, but it lacks that “it” factor that made their peers rich and famous.
Bodyjar’s 1996 release Rimshot! is one of the better underground punk records I’ve heard in a long time. It is pop punk without whining, but raw, full of energy and classic songs. You won’t get most of these songs stuck in your head, but it’s still a great example of good, quality, new school punk. Check it out today, and support underground punk rock.
Story of the Year’s new record on Epitaph came out yesterday and they have released this really cool music video. MTV might not be playing videos anymore, but man, this is solid. Story of the Year impressed me on their last record and they keep making good alternative music. Epitaph has a winner on their hands.
Oh man, this is a terrible thing, reviewing again. Well not terrible for me, but for you that has to read my drivel, but I’m getting back to it, so here we go, movie reviews, beginning with a classic.
The Producers, the 1968 Mel Brooks movie making debut, is an instant classic. Despite the terrible new remake a few years back, although Uma Thurman is hot, this film holds up quite well. Mel Brooks came out of the gate with a funny premise where two producers plan to make a flop in order to make a quick buck because of the negative publicity it would generate. “Springtime for Hitler” is probably the worst thing anyone could ever attempt to make, and that’s why it’s comedic goal.
Rounding out the cast Gene Wilder, Zero Mostel, and Lee Meredith, make me actually not hate a musical. Yeah, it’s rare, but it happens, and what better way to enjoy something than with Mel Brooks at the director’s chair?
While this doesn’t ring as the favorite for everyone as Brook’s best, it still has enough musical comedy to satiate any fan.
The Producers came out in 1968 and is available on dvd and blu-ray disc, click here to purchase it.
I admit, I’m not always up to snuff in regards to posting on the blog, but I’ve been really busy. I’ve been working on a top secret project…well no, I’ve been depressed and have yet to even get a job interview. Either way, Gil Scott heron’s video for “Me and The Devil” is found here…it has skateboarding, and cool music, enjoy.
Alkaline Trio really are back to form, three piece punk rock with no frills. I didn’t like their major label stuff they were putting out, with lots of production and slick music videos featuring Kat Von D and CGI trains. However, this one is welcome, almost like a return to form for the guys in the Trio, and I like it. Here’s their latest video off of their up and coming album on Epitaph Records:
When I was a teenager my friends and eye were in somewhat awe of Bleeding Through. When they would show up to shows with Point of Recognition, Hope Conspiracy and others, we’d see the singer get some mad props for just looking and being cool. They played with some of my favorite bands growing up, including and not limited to Zao, Falling Cycle, Hatebreed, and so many others. I still love metalcore, hardcore and heavy music and that’s never going to change.
So when I saw that they are hitting the road I got excited but more so the fact that they are going on tour with one of my favorite bands of the current hardcore era: Sleeping Giant. Sleeping Giant has one hell of a message and they have one of the best metallic hardcore albums out now with “Sons of Thunder”. They are an amazing live act to see, and top that off with Bleeding Through, and you’ve got one of the best tours to hit the U.S Hardcore scene in a long time. You owe it to yourself to check out this tour, as it’s going to be one of the best things going on near you in a long time.
What saddens me greatly about this tour though, is the fact that the tour will not be coming anywhere near me. I live in Moscow, Idaho and NO ONE comes here. Not to mention anywhere near me…so that’s that. here are the tourdates to one of the best hxc tours I’ve seen in a long time:

On this Monday, I got this song stuck in my head, it’s from Rancid and the lyrics really hit me in the heart, especially the second chorus which rings in my head on a daily basis:
